October November December
The beginning of the autumn,
with cooler days and nights and windier weather, although hot weather is still strong
possibility till the end of the month.
Flowers and bedding
Wallflowers are available from the bank holiday onwards but only until about Bonfire
Night,so make sure you get them in time. Some winter pansies and other autumn and winter
bedding will also be around, but remember your summer bedding will last until mid October
so don't be in too much of a hurry. Continue planting spring bulbs.
Perennials
Continue dead heading and cutting back. Feed Dahlias and bring pot grown Chrysanthemums
into the greenhouse.
Shrubs and climbers
Start planting evergreens towards the end of the month. Stake them well as they won't have
enough roots growth to hold themselves upright if it is windy. Trim Phlomis and Senecio
after flowering, unless you want to leave the flowers on for winter interest.
Trees and hedges
Trim hedges, prepare beds for new planting. Start planting evergreen hedging from the end
of the month.
Roses
Dead head and spray. Prune once flowering climbers, ramblers and weeping standards. Clear
up all dead leaves as soon as they fall and burn rather than compost them. Many rose
problems like blackspot, rust and mildew overwinter on dead leaves to reinfect the plant
next year.
Lawns
Scarify, aerate and re-seed. Use autumn lawn food. The more preparation and work you put
into your lawn in the autumn the less you will have to do next year and the better it will
look. From now on you can start to turf and seed as long as the ground isn't water-logged
or frozen.
Vegetables
Sow overwintering lettuce, lift maincrop carrots.
Fruit
Finish summer pruning of apples and pears. Pick autumn fruiting raspberries. Prepare
storage space for apples and pears.
Pond
Feed fish as live food is becoming scarce. Many oxygenating and floating plants overwinter
as buds on the bottom of the pond. These can be collected and stored overwinter in a
waterfilled jar in a cool place.
Greenhouse
You may need to put up the insulation this month, and possibly turn on the
heating.Sow next years annuals.
Indoors
Bring in any houseplants that are in the garden, checking them for pests before bringing
them in. Move plants back to South and West facing windows from North and East facing
ones. Water and feed a little less.
