July

January    February    March    April    May    June

July    August    September    October    November    December

July is usually the warmest and wettest of the summer months. It is quite often the month when we go on holiday.

  • Flowers and bedding
Water,dead-head and feed. If you are going on holiday get someone to come in and water while you are away. If you can't find a willing volunteer, put all your containers and baskets in a shady spot and soak them thoroughly before you go. Plant autumn flowering bulbs such as Colchicums.

  • Perennials
Cut back early flowering perennials to encourage a second flush of flowers. Cut back Lupins and delphiniums to ground level to encourage them to flower again. Continue to feed and debud dahlias, feed and tie in Chrysanthemums.

  • Shrubs and climbers
Prune Jasmine and Philadelphus after flowering.

  • Trees and hedges
Continue to weed the base of hedges. Trim Quickthorn.

  • Roses
Cut for flowers and deadhead. Keep spraying and give them a feed.

  • Lawns
Try not to water as it will make the grass more prone to drying out in the future. If you do have to, leave the sprinkler in position for a long time, so that the water thoroughly penetrates the soil.

  • Vegetables
Sow swedes and hardy turnips. Finish planting leeks, late sprouts, sprouting and spring broccoli.Water crops when dry. Start to lift onions and shallots, cut cucumbers.

  • Fruit
Pick soft fruit, summer prune restricted fruit trees (those trained in certain forms such as espaliers).Thin apple and pear fruitlets. Protect against birds and support heavily laden branches. Discard strawberry plants that have cropped three times. Pick raspberries, cut down those canes that have fruited and tidy the plants up. Continue summer pruning vines.

  • Ponds
Weed regularly. Thin oxygenating plants and lily leaves if they are crowding the pool.

  • Greenhouse
Water, ventilate and damp down. Take pelargonium cuttings. Pick fruit.

  • Indoors
Continue watering and feeding. If you are going on holiday try to get someone to water your plants, it does help if they know what they are doing. If you can't persuade someone to help, or your friends are not greenfingered, put the plants in the bath and fill it a couple of inches full. This should keep them relatively safe till you return.
