'CHIMES OF DELIGHT'

Friends of Willingdon School in Eastbourne have been delighted to receive a donation of ‘Silver Chimes’ daffodil bulbs from Paradise Park Garden Centre, Newhaven to enable pupils of the school to launch a ‘Big Bulb’ day on Thursday 3rd November.

Mark Gilbert, Sales Director at Paradise Park, explains how important it is to get children involved at an early age. “Results from a recent survey from the Royal Horticultural Society have found that children benefit greatly from school gardening”, says Mark. ”I was lucky enough to get involved in gardening at early age and believe passionately in supporting gardening in the school curriculum” .
The survey, commissioned by the UK’s leading gardening charity, asked 500 parents, grandparents and primary school-aged children about their gardening habits, to discover if there is a ‘lost generation of gardeners’. The survey found that fewer than 1% of parents were taught to garden while at school, compared to 55% of grandparents and 40% of children. With 65% of parents admitting that their own parents (now grandparents) know more about gardening than they do, and nearly half believing their own children, aged 4–11, have equal or better horticultural knowledge than themselves, it would seem today’s parents are shy of volunteering their time probably due to a lack of knowledge.
Kylie Higgins from ‘Friends of Willingdon’ who helped organise the event, was thrilled to have received the offer of bulbs from Paradise Park. “Gardening brings so many benefits for pupils at Willingdon School such as working cooperatively in groups; learning about science and nutrition; and creating art and stories inspired by gardens”, says Kylie. “It also brings lifelong knowledge and enjoyment”.
