Alpines The introduction of alpines to gardens and alpine
houses has mainly occurred over the last 200 years. Explorers and botanists brought back
newly discovered plants chiefly from Europe. Few true rock gardens existed before
1900. Most species have small leaves and are low growing. This helps them survive the
extreme conditions of their natural environment.
